Internships and fellowships can be vital ways to gain real-world experience and training, and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has programs available for interested applicants. Students from high school to technical and community colleges to university and graduate levels, as well as recent graduates can take advantage of a variety of programs offered through DOE.
There are opportunities to expand your network, support your educational and career goals, and receive guidance from STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and STEM-adjacent professionals:
- The DOE Scholars Program is designed to prepare undergraduate and graduate students and recent graduates for the full range of entry- to mid-level research, technical, and professional positions within DOE. You do not need a direct STEM background to apply. Application deadlines vary for this paid opportunity but range from early January to late February.
- DOE's Office of Science is accepting applications for the Summer 2024 term of two stipend-based internship programs: the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program and the Community College Internships (CCI) program. Through SULI and CCI, community college students, undergraduate students, and recent graduates learn about science and technology careers at the DOE national laboratories and gain the experience needed to transition from internship to employment. The application deadline for both programs is January 9, 2024, at 5:00 pm ET.
- The Minority Educational Institution Student Partnership Program (MEISPP) offers paid 12-week summer internships with DOE offices and national laboratories. Sponsored by the Office of Energy Justice and Equity, the program partners with eligible minority-serving institutions to help undergraduate and graduate students and recent graduates "jump-start" their careers and develop their potential for future opportunities within the federal government. The application deadline is Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 11:59 pm ET.
- MEISPP also offers Application Assistance Workshops to help applicants create a strong application. All workshops are from 2:00 - 3:00 pm ET and upcoming dates include January 15, 2024, and February 1, 2024.
