We have many ASES members located in California. What can Solar Today do to better reflect your concerns and interests?

Hey Kat: I was just doing my usual "scan down" of first page topics here. I noticed that this one of yours is 5 days old and has zero replies (Until now). I popped in and took a look at the content. Simple and direct enough question. But the zero puzzled me. SO I found my self wondering what "might" be logical reasons for this. The results are as follows:

CA though being a very large population state (Understatement) and perceived as progressive and green, maybe has allot of local organizations, groups, etc. that satisfy their social and business exchange requirements, negating a big need for national affiliations..??..

They perceive themselves way ahead of "the pack" and think ASES does not have allot to offer them, though your question certainly attempts to crack open the door of that possible perception.

They are all to busy buying fire extinguishers or boats to handle the extreme swings mother nature, curtesy of man, is throwing at them. (Intended humor)

Perhaps they feel since they (CA) is often the creator of regulations and systems of implementation regarding RE (Including EV, CAFE, etc.) they have gotten used to being the offeror of information, etc. rather than the receiver, and seeking doesn't cross their mind..??.. (Habit).

Or just maybe they feel that their problems are unique to CA with little overlap to the rest of the country..??..

Anyway, that's what I came up with being from PA and an East coaster...
Who knows I suppose.... Good question you put forward though...

Maybe our California members are less active in the online community than our other members are. It's hard to say why. Maybe they are more actively following our other channels such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook.

TBH, I would be scratching my head trying to answer this from Ohio, too.

Well, the people they elected in Ohio have a trash RE agenda. Their governor there killed the SREC program a couple of years back, and given recent elections, I don't see that path changing anytime soon. As for CA, maybe they are just busy buying boats or fire extinguishers..??..
Given the release of the video a few hours ago, the news cycle for a few days at least, will be all about that with no real change as usual.... They should just leave flags at half mast all the time....

    Hi Kat,

I know your OP asked specifically about CA.  But since Ohio was mentioned in a few replies, I would like to respond, because I am from Ohio as well.  We in Ohio, and I am sure in other state, need better policies and support for solar from our local and state leaders.  I would love to see Solar Today write articles that fairly describe the challenges we face, the benefits that would be gained, and the changes that need to be made, concerning wider deployment of solar.  In Ohio, we need a law passed that authorizes community solar. Many homes and businesses do not have sufficient unshaded roof or ground space for a solar array, and ensuring individuals and businesses have the opportunity to invest in solar off their premises would provide the economic and environmental benefits needed.  Also, Ohio just passed a law that defined green energy to include the burning of fossil gas (a better term than natural gas) to generate electricity, and this bill also requires that state agencies open public lands and parks to drilling and fracking.  And as Bill said, Ohio killed the SREC market by weakening our RPS and establishing rules for SREC market that further suppress the value of SRECs.  And people may remember recently the corrupt passage of a bill to try to subsidize old coal and nuclear plants (one was not even located in Ohio) after payoffs and dirty backroom dealings between state legislature and fossil fuel industry criminals.  Solar Today should help shine a light on these bad acgtors and policies.   We need companies that have facilities here in Ohio, or that may want to locate here, to know that our leaders are doing these things, hurting Ohioans, and hurting US citizens beyond our border, so they can help us fight back.

I think you pretty much detailed out all the problems and the source of them. Its just that any real solution is going to be ugly and people don't like to "go there".  I often think how far emotionally the people in this country had to be pushed to start up 1776. It had to have been huge. When you have the level of money corruption in our whole government buying our daily lives via the Billionaire class, the pawns and wanna-bees, "regular" measure has little effect.
I like to think of this analogy. Baseball. Suppose you have the owners of the leagues engaging in corrupt money practices that are ruining the game for those in it, and to a certain degree outside it, but they are still making plenty of profit. Continuing to play by the rules of the baseball game (Playing baseball) within the stadium is not going to effect the corruption outside the stadium walls. You have to go outside the parameters of the game itself and attack the owners directly, other wise you are really just spinning your wheels, and so on......
Think of all that has been done to try and limit the FFI for over 50 years, and yet, here we are, still pumping massive amounts of CO2, CH4 etc.. into the bio-sphere of this planet, despite vivid consequences already showing up around the globe....
Opps, gee, that was dark wasn't it.....
What's that old riddle, Ohio, is round on the ends and Hi in the middle. The question is what kind of HI?

Ken, would you be interested in writing an op-ed explainer for Solar Today about the issues in Ohio that you mentioned? If so, you can pitch the idea to me by emailing me a couple paragraphs at kfriedrich@ases.org (along with a one-paragraph bio about your relevant professional experience).
