Sad news -- one of the buildings in the huge Otay storage facility in Otay, California has been burning for 5 days (according to a news report in San Diego Tribune yesterday.
Firefighters thought it was out but it seems to have restarted. Not sure what the status is right now. Seems to me likely a failure of engineering. There are fears that it could spread to other buildings(containing more lithium batteries), but right now that looks unlikely.
In my opinion, there needs to be better cooling, better isolation of batteries and battery banks. Hopefully there are automatic systems to cut off the electrical connections when problems are detected. Do a Bing or Google search for "Otay Lithium."
