I wrote an article on space-based solar power recently that is in WIRED this week. It is also in Ars Technica.

    https://www.wired.com/story/sun-based-solar-power-esa-energy/
I'm interested in hearing what you think of it.

We might actually help save the planet if we spent the same money capturing the 5 times more energy than we need currently hitting the earth's surface. Beaming energy into the earth's protective layer will only warm it more and is a terrible idea.

Talking about a time when there may be no planet (so planet scientists say) isn't useful.

The only benefit is  It keeps your name before the public and assures some scientists jobs..

    Hi Kat
In your article you mention the single benefit of space-based PV power - steady 24/7 electricity on earth regardless of clouds. But then you list the many many really difficult challenges. As you note, this idea has been around for a long time but there has never been a credible attempt to even try a pilot scale project due to the immense costs and technical challenges. Someone would have to do a carbon-balance to see if all of the fossil-fuel energy to launch this amount of mass is off-set by the energy delivered. And a cyberattacker taking control would be deadly to millions on earth.

Sorry but this is another idea that is almost literally 'pie-in-the-sky'. We have all the tech we need to decarbonize our energy systems now. We just need the political will to do it.

Honestly, I look at it as another "Star Wars" defense system, distraction, while good old RR had you looking for LASERs in the sky, he was derailing/killing every RE initiative he could here on the ground. Same thing here. Get them looking up while you delay and obstaclize / sabotage all RE on the ground.

The tactics always remain the same. Misdirection, delay, lie.

8/2: As an added FYI, $30 Billion was spent from 1983 to 93 on that project!! $30 Billion. Distractions can be expensive.... Gold old RR.

Bill, I don't see any evidence that the European Space Agency or Space Solar are attempting to sabotage solar activities on the ground.

    LOL... I would hope not....

In a hierarchical structure, control is as the top. The more strategic the "items" on the menu, the higher it goes and the fewer know about the details, if at all. Its all about the money, as always. Who has it, who wants it, and how to hold on to it. Always has been.... Personally I think most of the time, depending, most individuals from the middle on down, are trying to do a good well intentioned job. That can change of course when it gets to carrying torches in the street by the bottom layer....

I agree with most of what you are saying, Steven. We should be decarbonizing on the ground. Doing an equation to see how the carbon impacts compare would be logical. As the article says, the microwaves would not be deadly to people on Earth. I agree that the costs and technical challenges are extensive. I see space-based solar power as an interesting topic to discuss, but I'm skeptical of what will happen with it. The article communicates that I am skeptical.

    Hi David,
I agree that solar power on the ground is more practical in our current situation.
It's interesting that you asked about the system warming the atmosphere. I don't believe that would be significant.
    Best,
    Kat

I started to write this response, but I realized I was going to be out of contact (below the horizon like the Tet in Oblivion), so I will have to pick up this comment when the earth swings around. Later....
