What do you think is the biggest need in terms of educational materials for folks to go solar?

In my experience, people want to know most about the financial aspects of going solar. When will the solar system pay for itself? What are the costs to install a solar system? Occasionally someone will tell me that "it's the right thing to do". In my community (retirement), I was the first to install solar (rooftop). Now 14 other homes in our community have solar panels on their roofs!

    Bill

i also was first to put up a solar system in my development in south central Florida. Now quite a few have systems. I'm considering adding battery storage to my grid tie system now but the prices are still too high. Like you, I'm retired and was  looking for something worthwhile to do in my spare time.

    Great points William Baker !

So my R-38 insulation and double-paned argon-filled windows had
a 10 year+ payback on my two solar buildings in VA

My geothermal ductless heat pump had an 8-year payback.

My solar water heater (with PV glycol pump) paid back in 7
    years.

My PV on my house (went in 1985) paid back in 13 years
And my PV on my office buildng in 11 years, small wind turbine
      in 6 years

I have been in my house for 39 years, and my office building 33
years, so have reaped a huge profit with the decisions I made.
This is not brain surgery. .. add in power quality benefits in terms
of no lost equipment ( surges, sags, transients, etc), and no loss
of business for power outages due to my battery banks ...

    Ella Nielsen,
The biggest educational need is a list of best alternatives in each jurisdiction, particularly which solar cell system manufacturers (once rated by FL rating agency), and saying that one can produce all or part of their use.

Also, in many jurisdictions net metering, or other energy storage (building thermal storage during the bridge months before the heating season, or larger battery vehicle battery storage), may make the cost of in-building battery systems unnecessary.

As eluded to below, people do it when they see other people do it. Its like many social "moves" that people make. Its why tip jars are never put out empty. A dance floor will never populate until someone takes the first step out there. Etc..

It would almost be worth a large enough solar companies interests to pay someone in the neighborhood "of choice" to put solar on their roof (Assuming none) to get the ball rolling.

There was a movie back a ways (Maybe 10 years) that had a fake family move into a neighborhood to spur sales of all kinds of consumer products. Before long everyone in the "hood" was jumping on the band wagon, even if they could not afford it.

That aside, I find that people who will actually end up with solar, ask a couple of questions then just do it (Sorry for the slogan). Those that ask enough questions to write a book, will 10 years down the road be asking the same questions. I always called them fence sitters.

SO give them some logical common sense answers (Financial, visual, perks), avoid the "green" speech (If they would like it, they already know it), etc..

Create in person solar events to sell it... with people that already have it...etc..

"Going solar" means something different to some of us. Educational barriers to incorporating passive solar heating and passive cooling exist across the spectrum, from elementary school, through grad school to continuing education for professionals. Passive solar heating can be demonstrated with a cardboard box,  a brick and some Saran Wrap. Wish all kids were shown this experiment, or even better, did it themselves.

Aside from teaching solar thermal principles, there is also a lack of design tools. PVWatts is accessible and easy to use for PV design, but there is not a similar tool for solar space heating or water heating.

Hello Keith, There are a few tools I use for Passive Solar design. Either for study or for teaching. Its very direct and graphic. it will not produce numbers but very visual. I use it for off South analysis as well as shading situations. A simple model can show a lot. a  photo from horizon can show seasonal or hourly changes. its for 36 N lat. should be good for your area.

    Mark,

I like it! We built a heliodon to do the same thing. Not very portable, but you can do demonstrations indoors and at night. Yours is simpler and cheaper.

    Everyone should learn this stuff!

    Love this conversation!

Bill, Glenn, Scott, David - I hope you're all signed up for the National Solar Tour!  This is exactly the point of the Tour!  When folks Show Off their Solar , more people go solar!  Please sign up! (www.nationalsolartour.org)

Yes, I have been on the Nationa Solar Home Tour for ages.
Since I give a few tours a month, and have two buildings with
blends of clean energy technologies, i have a great
     turnout on the Nat'l Tour date - from 80 - 175 people
     pending on the weather !!!

Seeing is believing, and talking with people who have
      experience is so important.

    Very best, Scott

    Location, location and location.

I used to do them. Don't anymore. If no one comes there is no point no matter what you have.

You are in a prime area of course. When you can have allot of attendees, its allot of fun educating people with demos and shear knowledge, Q&A etc..

    Always enjoyed it.

Ah, William!  Please reconsider this year!  The addition of VIRTUAL sites on the tour makes your site as easily accessible as any website by anyone anywhere.  And, once you make your video or photo collage, you can post it for each year's NST if you like - maybe just updating for new added features to your home!

If your home has solar and other energy efficient features, please do take the time to show it off.  Here's a video that our son did a few years ago.  I can't wait to see yours!

Dara; Being very specific here, for my location, the most I ever had in this spot was maybe 5 during the past when solar was still a, "Oh look! What is that" phase.

Ironically, or not, the times when I have had bigger crowds to teach and talk to were as follows:

    1. Going down to our local school district and teach the 4th graders over the course of a few days and giving them class room "content" and finishing off with the spectacular solar thermal demo outside of course. I used to love how many mouths dropped. Those were before the days when crazy regulations had you going through a Federal and State multi day security process with all the associated paper and cost.

    2. There was a yearly Run that my friends used to hold followed by a party that went into the evening. I used to do the thermal demo at that. Adults only. Still got mouths to drop. It was great fun and allot of Q&A.

    3. Going to big RE festivals and doing presentations incorporating Solar thermal "class" type situations under a tent usually, and the active thermal demo outside (My favorite). Always loved watching the faces of people when I burst into flames, 2x4's that was soaking wet and dripping with water. Flames, steam, noise and dripping water. Doesn't get any better for drama, impact and memory....

The Q&A was also really good. So much misunderstanding and lack of knowledge about solar. Still seems to persist today to a large degree, but less I think...

    Enjoy this years event....

Those all sound great. Would you be willing to video yourself doing the outside "spectacular solar thermal demo" and  sharing that as a NST site?  You won't be able to see the mouth drop open but if you include your contact information you might get some good questions and opportunities to teach more from that.

Not as dramatic as smoke and flames, but here is a nice passive solar lesson plan: https://environmentalsociety.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Adapted-Passive-Solar-House.pdf
