I had 16 solar panels installed on my roof in 2015. Since then the company I engaged in this work has gone out of business. I would like some advice on connecting with a new service provider who can perform a routine service check on my panels. The company also installed my mini splits and furnace and I need to get routine service checks for these also. Will appreciate any recommendations form this community.

Not to side step your question, but if you have a string inverter based system (One inverter) VS micro inverters (One for every panel), you can probably go to the display screen on a clear sky day around solar noon, and push some buttons to see the KW being gened. You can compare that output to the system rated capacity. On a PSD (Perfect Solar Day) your output should be 80% or higher rated capacity, give or take.

As to you question, you of course have to check current local installers that may be willing to look at the system, if you output is way out of "range".

Clear sky days are great for assessing problems.

Hi John,  My company is based in Ohio and we receive calls pretty regularly from homeowners with Solar PV systems that were installed by a company that went out of business (i.e. Power Home Solar or Pink Energy) and now have issues needing fixed or just want a new solar company to partner with to ensure it keeps working properly.

The first thing I do when contacted is ask the homeowner for permission to have the installer account associated with their monitoring system transferred to our company account.  This is simple in the case of Generac PWRcell or SolarEdge systems, just a request to their support to have the monitoring switched over.  This gives us access to view how the system is performing, and insight into any error logging or other past issues.  From there, we talk with the homeowner about any concerns they have and can start to troubleshoot and work with the manufacturers to pursue any hardware warranty claims, or we provide a quote for any work not covered by a warranty.

I would suggest calling a few local solar installers near you, and ask lots of questions such as how often they service existing systems versus new installs, what brands of equipment do they have experience with repairing, and what their process is if you were to choose them as a partner to service your system even though they did not install it.  I recommend you review your system yourself to the best of your ability, understand what brands and model equipment you have, and look at your monitoring system for any obvious errors logged or anything that looks unusual. If you have a paper copy or electronic copy of any owners manual or  drawings that your installer provided, have them available.  Just make sure you feel comfortable after talking with any installer you choose, and know it is like anything else, you want the company that knows what they are doing, not the one with the slickest sales pitch and that avoids specifics.

As an aside, if it is a Generac PWRcell system, if the SnapRS devices in the array have not been replaced yet, that definitely needs to be done (covered by warranty) regardless if they have failed yet or not.
