"Home performance professionals are often called in after a solar array was installed when the customer is saying, 'It's not saving me as much as they said it would.'  That can be avoided by simply going beyond the electric bills and taking a holistic look at the energy consumption of a home.

The phrase 'home performance' describes how all aspects of a home work together as one comprehensive system. Solar is within that system, but many solar salespeople and installers don't realize that - and they're losing money because of it."

"It's not saving me as much as they said it would."

I read this line in your quote from the article, and instantaneously the first thing that popped into my mind was, "that's because they really don't care to know or understand."

I can not tell you how many people I "bump" into and solar comes up and I always ask, "Do you know how many Kilowatts of panels you have?"

    Answers:

Oh, well, I think.... ah.... I can't remember really. They just said I would save..."

"Oh I have no idea. I just wanted solar so I had it put in."

There are multiple variations of these answers but they all mean the same thing. You ask them how much they paid for it however, and most of the time you get a rough answer. Imagine that.

People when they are buying something they don't understand or really care to (Electricity), just want it. They pay a fleeting instant in time to what you are telling them and then it is forgotten. Somewhere along the line they see a bill that's bigger then what their sub-conscious memory expected, and the above quote from the article gets spoken.

The reason this happens is that RE is expected to save money for them. They buy a refrigerator and the expectation is it will keep stuff cold. Not save them money. They buy a car and it is suppose to get them from A to Z without breaking. They buy a new chair and it is suppose to be comfortable.

They buy solar panels however, and the electric bill should disappear.

To conclude, the rest of the stuff the article talks about is all fine, and is of logical thinking. But people will remember what they are interested in, or in the case of people, who they are interested in, and they will tend to remember the things from the people they "like". Its like social circles. People will end up being friends by their unconscious desires and attractions, and its a two way street. If you have to "work" at getting to know someone, it probably ain't going to happen, with rare exceptions, excluding the work environment because "you" have to be together. Most ALL relationships are proximity based, which is why when friends move away the friendship usually dies, basically speaking.

This TFTD which is over 20 years ago, describes it like this, " #036. "Human friendships develop based on a few criteria. Sexual attraction, common interests and amicable personalities are the "attractors" cultivating those friendships. Everything else is a segregator leading to a negative perception, limiting the pool of possible entrants with age and socio-economic status being at the top of the list. The transition from acquaintance to friendship will only happen if the sum total of the attractors exceeds the sum total of the negative perceptions."

Another sunny day here and the power keeps racking (Pun intended) up.

Discouraging that passive solar, passive cooling and solar water heating are not mentioned in the home performance article. The article makes 15-35% savings sound like a big deal, but there is much more potential.

Keith, I will share your feedback with the author.

Bill, your comment about friends is amusing to me. I am currently in the process of making some new friends in Wisconsin after relocating back here after 10 years in Massachusetts and Vermont.

Regarding your comment about people being motivated by what matters to them emotionally and caring more about finances than kilowatts, that makes sense to me. I am interested in finding out what other factors motivate people to take an interest in solar power. We should have a productive discussion about behavior and marketing in the December issue of Solar Today.

Hi Kat: I am glad I got you to smile. As a refinement to the, "If you have to work at it...", that said, you by all means have to put yourself out there. It is really a numbers game, much like sales. You want to increase your possible friendships and acquaintances, you have to increase your so called failures and or rejections. Its hard to meet people if you stay home and watch tv or your computer.

I grew up in NH so I pretty much know your previous location. Your new one however I don't. Good luck though.

That is definitely how it is. I have transplanted myself to new parts of the United States twice since college and both times, I have gone out of my way to go to events and look for friends online. It seems to work well when I do that, although people do seem more into staying at home since the pandemic began.
