    Kat,
    Solar in emergencies, comes down to potable "disease free" water, shelter, heat, food, cooking & sanitation. Where does solar help?

    Water = boiling or sterilization using UVC
         Small Solar concentrator, like Haines 2,  or
         Aquasense UVC single water bottles or flow systems
    Shelter / Heat = passive solar structures
         Permanent - Trailers
         Temporary -  Tents
    Food =
         Solar refrigeration
         Solar drying
    Cooking =
          Thermal solar cookers
           PV solar hot plates / ovens
     Sanitation =
           Solar composting toilets
           Solar solid waste dryers.

    Given the number of solar technologies that apply, you might consider a column featuring "Solar sustainability" in several issues each one featuring one of the topics above

    @william fitch , @Timothy Mcbride and Keith,

    I'm still at the drawing board regarding that issue and what it might be called. It would be about how the solar industry can help people survive emergencies, so yes, it would deal with resilience and off-grid technologies. It's not necessarily focused on self-reliance or DIY. The word "resilience" would be a good fit. We have a lot of theme ideas in our queue; this one is in the middle of the list, so it might be a while before we explore this idea.
