  • 1.  Tesla Batteries-lightning fried them

    Posted 10-25-2022 06:43 AM
    Good morning,

I have two Tesla batteries and after two months we had a lightning storm and they no longer work.  The install company said it is a Tesla warranty issue but the warranty does not cover lightning.  Has anyone dealt with this and what are the options?  I know it is covered under home warranty, I was just hoping there were other options.

    Thanks,

    Josh

Lightning is a bitch. One of the problems with it is that the immediately noticeable equipment that failed may not be the only equipment effected. You might want to have an independent electrician come in and check all the grounding on the system. If they did not put adequate grounding on the system, you may be able to yell loud and specifically enough to get the original installation company to take notice.

And it may not only be Tesla.  We had a Generac customer lose a battery and inverter in what appeared to be a lightening strike.  Generac did step up and replace the equipment, but they were fried. Along with a hot tub and other equipment.

Nothing is immune to lightning. That is why OVER grounding with multiple grounding rods along a possible given conduction path, and even putting surge protectors across the breaker's L1 and L2 associated with all the relevant equipment is WORTHWHILE.
Advanced Protection Technologies SPDee devices are really good. They come in AC and DC models at varying voltages. I have had them on my AC and solar PV dc feeds for over a decade and no lightning problems. That said, I do have 12 - 8' ground rods connected in an array fashion protecting all my various equipment.
If that seems a bit excessive, I once got hit with lightning at my location and it fried a lot of stuff. That is when I went postal on keeping that from happening again. That "hit" was back in the 90's.
