Climate has a tremendous amount to do with how a house is designed if you are really looking to be energy independent. And on top of that, WHO and how many are going to be living in the home also has a tremendous impact. Our major electricity use is not heating and cooling despite that we live in central PA. It is transportation (Approx. 10MWH/yr) and all the other electrical loads combined. Cooking, computers, backup battery floating, refrigeration, well pump, clothes drying, entertainment, ventilation, etc.. added to what ever heating, cooling, lighting remain.
When I am completely done with my PV projects, I will eventually have 86 panels and should be able to gen on average 25 to 35MWH/yr. AT that point, I should always be able to export power year over year to the grid no matter how cloudy it is.
Solar's major power variability is not external temperature, its the amount of available direct sunlight. The difference between a PSD (Perfect Solar Day) and a cloudy day in PV generation can be as high as 100 fold (Winter dark day) when combined with seasonal illumination differences, though on average it runs around 5 to 10 fold.

So.... it sure seems like the simple solution is a well insulated, passive solar building with an air source heat pump run from electricity generated from an on site PV array...... with storage and grid tied for cloudy days.

I sampled it really fast. Ya, its the simple unchangeable realities of H2. If you understand those, the rest is all smoke and mirrors....
Not a good choice.
Of course the absolutely best way to get rid of CO2 and all the others is to STOP PUTTING IT THERE in the first place...!!..

Nate Hagens had the brilliant chemist and industrial process engineer Paul Martin on this week's edition of The Great Simplification - which connects Energy, the Environment, the Economy & Society to look at the Big Picture.
Paul has some good science on the trouble with the tiniest molecule on the planet.
Definitely worth a listen!

Hi Jay -
Is there a recording of this session? I'd love a link.
Thanks,
Dara

In addition to recapping the week's solar news, we discuss the hype and problems with the so called "Hydrogen Economy."
Each Tuesday at noon (Eastern) solarPVtraining.com hosts a Zoom sessions for students (or anyone, really) interested in solar. Generally discussion focuses on technical questions, problems or troubleshooting - or just what is happening in solar that week.
