As you know when preparing a paper for a conference you have to focus within the parameters of a timeframe for presentation but nevertheless as you requested the energy saved by not having to use electricity from storage or otherwise instead, to directly heat water with the sun and or wood which is indirect solar as photosynthesis. The calculation would be forthcoming as savings otherwise if one household had to heat water with traditional utility systems. For instance the energy cost of cutting and gathering firewood accordingly for the wood heater apparatus. Way back in 1989 when these experiments were active for the data at the off grid cabin site we did add extra insulation to the tanks as well the attic and walls and tested towards a very tight enclosure otherwise. We calculated the wood stove would operate around 4.32 kwh when thermal couples were operational, also when we were having full sun the solar collector would operate around 5.76 kwh. We figured the offset in savings at the hot water tank around 10 kwh per day if otherwise using the electricity from the utility to accomplish the same task. We tested the solar collector passively with just sun activated thermosiphon then we also tested with a active small PV direct pump that would automatically circulate the fluid when the sun source was there. Additional Cooling/Heating in the cabin was attached Solarium - window fans, and passive cooling tubes underground, we later added in a small window air conditioner that would run off a PV array during the hottest hours of the day. Thanks for sharing. It would be interesting to know how much energy you get from different sources, not just those involving electricity. You have a solar (thermal) water heater, and you burn wood. It would be good to know the amount of each in kWh. If you use passive solar heating and/or passive cooling, that would be nice to know also.
