I had a very basic food dryer, best for fruits, that was a basic open frame with four or five slots for aluminum screen material with a wood perimeter, as those for paper making.
In October with humidity down, I positioned the dryer at my southern exposure window. Sliced apples take about three days. Macintosh apples are perfect for drying since they do keep their color. I also put the trays inside my car at the windshield. also works for fruit leathers. The trays can also be put inside a warm oven. Drying vegetables is more problematic and sulfur dioxide may need to be used.
The Amish store, Lehman's may be selling a version of basic food dryer.
