- The 6 MW solar tower and heliostat field
- Falling Particle Receiver and supercritical CO2 loop
- Solar Furnace
- High-temperature test rigs and robotic solar simulator
- World's first original molten salt experimental remnants and the modern molten salt test loop
- Various historic solar concentrators
- Optics Lab
- Workshops
- Control Tower
About the NSTTF tours
Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) R&D has been ongoing at Sandia Labs in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Livermore, California, since the 1970s. The U.S. Department of Energy selected Sandia's Albuquerque site to host the National Solar Thermal Test Facility which officially opened in 1978. For over 40 years, the NSTTF has been a pioneer and leading facility in the advancement of CSP technologies worldwide. Current CSP R&D includes testing of solar integrated supercritical CO2 cycles, high temperature falling particle and liquid receivers, thermal energy storage, heliostat optics, industrial process heat applications, and autonomous collector technologies.
PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS EVALUATION LABORATORY (PSEL)
PSEL is an integrated testing facility that uniquely combines indoor & outdoor module characterization capabilities with the ability to perform outdoor operational & reliability evaluations of PV systems & components. PSEL has been at the forefront of photovoltaic R&D & model development for more than three decades & leverages many cutting-edge in-house developed test capabilities. PSEL hosts the NM Regional Test Center (RTC) & PV Lifetime Projects in addition to Sunlamp projects focused on emerging technologies such as bifacial, shingled, and perovskite PV as well as the effects of climate events.
