This is just a short update on my replacement lead acid batteries for my backup power system. Back a few months ago there was a discussion on Li batteries for backup power. I had mentioned I had ordered a lead acid solution at a much reduced rate. Here is a photo of the installed batteries, 46KWH at a C-100 rate, 48VDC system. I am working out how I want to have my additional solar panels I am adding charge the batteries. Total cost $9400.00 Expected life 20+ years float application for backup only on grid failure. Qty - 24   S2-690's Rolls battery. OPzV tech.
    S2-690's qty 24.

Thanks. I am looking into getting a charge controller for them. I was thinking of using the sell option on my inverter to control that, but there are too many failure loopholes, leaving the bank subject to severe overcharging.

    Impressive.  I have both FLA and lithium banks in backup applications.  Rolls 12 × 2KS 33PS, 24V, 41kwh @ C20 (20 kwh usable at 50% SOC), 2007 vintage, and Simpliphi 3 ×  3.8kwh @ 48V, 2019 vintage.  The Rolls bank cost $7700 in 2007, the Simpliphis cost ~$7500 in 2019.

Considering their current ages, I suspect both banks will crap out at the same time.  But I think LiFePO4 would outlast FLA in off grid cycling applications.  I know a few off gridders who've made the switch to lithium and are never going back.

Yes. FLA's are not very long lived. That's why I went with the OPzV. There is no battery maintenance, no acid corrosion and could last over 20 years in a float situation, which mine is.

Those OPzV's still have acid, no?  My FLA's have lasted 15 years in a similar application as your new ones, and I expect them to last just as long.  My point was, in cycling applications, acid chemistry batteries (which your OPzV's are) will not last as long as lithiums.  Of course, the jury is still out since we don't have as much experience with Lithium batteries in off grid, renewable energy applications.  There's a place for lithium batteries, but perhaps not economical in float applications.  FWIW  - Mike

Li based batteries all have Lithium but that doesn't mean they all catch fire. My point is that in lead acid tech, there are "things" that make them last longer and tolerate heavy cycling better, like graphite and other chem's added to the pastes, that 2007 FLA batteries won't have, like the FLA's I just replaced (T-105's). This tech is also less susceptible to user errors, low battery fluid, etc., which can hasten failure.
That said, I hope your batteries do last 20 years. Why not, I mean...
