My non-profit organization does solar installs for low-income homeowners in Kansas City.  I'm working now with a homeowner who wants a generator for use when her power goes out.  We don't provide generators, but I told her I would see what I could find out about her options.  Does anyone have any recommendations for a generator?  Her main concerns are cost; she is on a fixed income, and wants the best value at the lowest cost possible.  I appreciate any information anyone is able to provide!

IMO, the best home generators are made by Honda.  But they are relatively expensive compared to what else is out there.  Her choice somewhat depends on what loads she wants to support during an outage.  If she needs something that her electronics can accept, Honda offers some 2000 watt inverter generators for around $1,000 or so.  Otherwise a non-inverter type might be a more economical choice.
