Absolutely! RESNet scoring starts with a blower door test. A what? Close up every opening to the outside especially a fireplace. The technician puts a stretchy plastic cover over an open door. There's a tiny fan on the cover. It's attached to the tech's computer. When the fan is turned on it's pulling air from lots of tiny places all over the house where outside air leaks in. Walk around with an infra red camera and you'll see the waves of outside air sneaking in around the window sill or pipes in the basement.
The infra red camera works best when there's a 15 degree difference between the inside air and the outside air.
The RESNet tech puts together the list of places to be fixed. Then, the tech comes back after renovations are done and retests the house with the blower door set up. With my three story house, we did one test on each floor. This 150 year old barn took a lot of work, 5 kinds of insulation, a chimney pillow, and cases of caulk.
YOU can start your own simple test on a windy day using an incense stick or smokeless stick from the hardware store. Even your hand may feel the cold air around an unsealed door or loose window. Start saving money with every little bit of caulk and insulation.

I am excited about RESNET being more active with ASES! I went to a RESNET annual conference a few years back and found the same level of knowledge, professionalism, and passion about saving energy, in general, to be similar to the knowledge, professionalism, and passion that occurs at the ASES national solar conference.
Hopefully, they will encourage their members to have many of their projects on the ASES National Solar Tour! Homes with low HERS ratings are one of the sustainability features that can qualify a building to be on a tour - even if it does not yet have solar panels.

The Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) was founded in 1995 as an independent, non-profit organization to help homeowners reduce the cost of their utility bills by making their homes more energy-efficient. To date, over 3 million homes have received a HERS Index Score.
