I hope someone can help me with a problem . A little over a year ago I purchased a solar system from a co. called power home solar/pink energy. It has a Generac inverter and apparently there is a part called a SnapRS that has been going bad. My system is only working at about 50% capacity ( I think because of this) . They have turned the service work over to a company called Sunnova . I have been waiting for several months. They have been slow to respond.       Any information on this would be GREATLY appreciated

This thread https://community.ases.org/discussion/solar-panel-upkeep-and-maintenance mentions your issue.  Perhaps Ken Nadsady may be able to point you in a helpful direction?

    Hi Danny,

I'm so sorry for this inconvenience! I assume you've tried contacting another local installer to help?  I know you mentioned they've been slow to respond, but if you can get ahold of Generac and see who their warranty repair company in your area is, I think that could be a good next step. @Kyle Combes do you have any suggestions for Danny?

    Thanks so much,
    Ella

Hi Danny, the SnapRS component in Generac PWRcell PV systems is a rapid shutdown switch installed between each solar panel in the array, so that the array can be brought down to a safe voltage when emergency responders or others need to be working on the roof near the array. As Generac I am sure told you, they are covering the replacement of all original model RS801 SnapRS devices with new RS802 models that should ne have the premature failure issue, under warranty. If you are in Northeast Ohio, my company can service your system. I know Sunnova is a national company and they may have good service personnel in your area that are just really busy, or they may have only installation crews and not service personnel close to you and that may be the cause of the delay.

When the SnapRS start failing, it only takes one failed unit in each string to take out the whole string. So yes, this issue can severely impact production. Whoever ends up fixing your system needs to be aware that Power Home / Pink Solar often did not adhere to industry accepted wiring management practices, and sometimes also did not follow racking manufacturer installation instructions. I have serviced Generac systems that those guys installed where the PV wiring was literally tied around rails and other cables in knots, or left laying directly on the roof. I have had to cut off connectors and reterminate because they pinched the PV wire between the rail and the panel as they tightened the mounting clamps.  I have found dozens of broken mounting hardware and had to order boxes of clamps to replace them because they did not use a torque wrench during the install.

So replacing the SnapRS devices should fix that specific Generac failure, but if Power Home / Pink messed up the wiring or racking, that will need to be addressed too. Just make sure when the service contractor says they are finished that they show you the status of all the optimizers as producing energy, and not in a state that says "lockout", or "disabled", or "low sun".   Homeowners should not have to understand this level of detail about their PV systems, but in this case I think you should do more due diligence if you want to make sure the system is fixed properly and will last.

I would call Generac back and ask for two more names of authorized Generac dealers in your area. Then call each and ask them how much experience they have in servicing and troubleshooting Generac PWRcell systems, or if they only install them. Good luck.
