Janice Means, P.E., LEED AP, FESD, FASHRAE
Professor Emerita, Lawrence Technological University
A Registered Professional Engineer for nearly 40 years, Ms. Means has diverse industry experience in HVAC, solar energy, facility O&M, and the writing and interpretation of codes and standards. She shared her expertise with university students for 15 years prior to becoming Professor Emerita from LTU. She is a Fellow and Life Member of ASHRAE and also an Engineering Society of Detroit Fellow.
She has served in several leadership positions and on multiple boards of professional organizations. She was Principal of Energy Technology Consultants, Chair of ESD Affiliate Council, President of the Detroit ASHRAE Chapter, Regional Vice Chair for Student Activities for ASHRAE’s Region V, Chair of the ASHRAE International Technical Committee on Solar Energy Utilization, and a member of Boards of Directors for the Detroit ASHRAE Chapter, Michigan Interfaith Power and Light, Michigan Solar Energy Association (a Chapter of ASES), and Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association (a Chapter of ASES). Recently, she became a member of the Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) Tech Century Editorial Board.
Ms. Means has authored numerous articles and papers, and presented at international conferences on sustainability topics, high performance buildings and STEM promotion for young women and minorities. She is the co-editor and co-author for the 4th, 5th and 6th editions of the book ASHRAE GreenGuide, a co-author for the Climate Change Chapter in the 2021 ASHRAE Fundamentals Handbook, and a co-author of ASHRAE Energy Guideline for Historic Buildings. She also serves on several ASHRAE International technical committees.
Janice is a strong promoter of sustainability and STEM outreach, having chaired ten local solar energy/sustainability conferences. She originated two local scholarships and currently serves on the International ASHRAE Scholarship Trustees Board.
Professor Means earned her MSE in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, a B.S. in General Engineering and a B.A. in Secondary Education with a Physics Minor, both from Oakland University.
Ms. Means has been honored with the 2020 ASHRAE E.K. Campbell International Award for teaching excellence, ESD Affiliate Council 2021 Gold Award, and the GLREA 2021 Melanie McCoy Leadership Award. In 2022, she was the 20th woman to become an ASHRAE Fellow in 126 years, and, tonight, is recognized with the ESD 2020 John Petty Image Award.
