I quoted and linked a detailed report on the Carrington event. While it is possible it's not clear what would happen if 1859 were repeated today. ------------------------------ Jan Galkowski retired; amateur quant bryologist; solar advocate Westwood MA ------------------------------

Can you educate us on how a CME at that distance would induce a sizeable EMP anywhere here? Even if there were a shared polarity in pulse or pulses it's hard to believe it could be sizeable. It would make more sense to defend it against nuclear attack, not that anyone would. -- Jan Galkowski, Westwood, ...

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I've since learned that installers work around this here in Massachusetts. They do provide access to roof peaks, for example, but these paths aren't necessarily on sides where there are panels. A lot of these problems could be avoided if there was more tolerance of ground ...

Well, DER doesn't really need that much storage if it's thought about and managed creatively. Yes, sharing of energy flows needs to be much more dynamic, but I think modern controls and digitization are up for that. And plans for large scale wind+solar+water+storage, whether that storage is battery or ...

Professors Severin Borenstein, James Bushnell, Steve Cicala and Ryan Kellogg from the U.C.Berkeley Haas School wrote an article saying that the CEPP is not a clean energy standard. While incentives for solar, wind, EVs, and batteries are good, what governments at all levels basically need to do is get ...

It's been brought to my attention that the 2018 revision of the Fire Code by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) contains restrictive language in their 11.12.3 which denies coverage of portions of rooftops by solar panels. In addition their 11.12.4 constrains vegetative screening on ground ...

I agree. Solar PV has value as long as the system is generating substantially as much as it originally did, simply because of avoided costs. And even if it isn't generating as much, there are paths to upgrading panels to newer, more efficient ones. Unless a new inverter is needed the cost ought not ...

Two questions to pose for general discussion. First, anyone have any takes or approaches to the increasingly "not in my neighborhood" attitudes towards residential ground mount PV, as well as large community solar projects near or in suburbs? The latter are sometimes coupled with (pretty selfish IMO) ...
