Yes, I have been on the Nationa Solar Home Tour for ages.Since I give a few tours a month, and have two buildings with blends of clean energy technologies, i have a great turnout on the Nat'l Tour date - from 80 - 175 people pending on the weather !!! Seeing is believing, and talking with people who ...

Great points William Baker ! So my R-38 insulation and double-paned argon-filled windows hada 10 year+ payback on my two solar buildings in VA My geothermal ductless heat pump had an 8-year payback. My solar water heater (with PV glycol pump) paid back in 7years. My PV on my house (went in 1985) paid ...

I still use Amory's book, Brittle Power in my three different GWU classes to begin the dialogue on "energy resiliency" and the "brittleness" of complex systems. Still very relevant today. Amory and I have worked to gether over many decades, and he was/is a most important thought- leader on our transition ...

Carl Weinberg was a giant in clean enegy. He was the most senior electric utility executive in the country (VP of PG&E) who was ardently pro-renewable, pro-distrbuted generation because of both technical and economic resiliency. He commissioned the best research, supported and got funded the biggest ...

I expect for 2023 - 1. PV import tariffs details and status 2. Supply chain issues for modules, balance of systems, battery banks etc. 3. Rural push back on large-scale PV projects 4. Interconnection backlog in various regional transmission organizations (RTOs) 5. Nuances in the IRA tax provisions on ...

William is correct. All systems have different designs. I have Sunpower, and may sensors at the panel level shows what is being produced. If you have combiner boxes, charge controllers, and different inverters draw down the power before the end-point. Even the differences in connectors degrade power. ...

Thanks for the insight, Dr Serene And I do not in any way diminish the need for addressing the global population issue and carrying capacity of the planet's ecosystems. Just that ASES is not best suited for that, and groups like the World Resource Institute (WRI), The United Nationa (MAHB) etc are ...

I want to go on-line to support Steve's guidance: "I wanted to point this out to help ASES avoid a similar divisive battle within our membership. Population growth and immigration is not core to our mission of promoting solar. I strongly recommend dropping it to prevent unnecessary conflict and distraction ...

Denis is exactly right -- we have never had some many people on this planet (over 8 billion this October) and the other issue is that over half of global population is now urbanized, which stresses global resources at higher and higher and higher levels. Now with the ice caps melting and coral reefs ...

Jay, I disagree. The grid is becoming less reliable (I teach a graduate course on this). In the digital age and with hotter summers and colder winters in a good part of the country, being without power is not an acceptable alternative when you have western summer days crossing 100 deg F and wind snaps ...

There are a small percentage of PV panels (modules) that die, mostly due to the fact that the resin that seals the glass over the solar material has microscopic holes which allow moisture to penetrate inside the PV module itself and shorts-out connections. This happens less and less frequently as our ...

I agree with this statement: "But in the big picture the utility deserves some compensation for use of their system, and for being the supplier of last resort at night or when your battery is low. " But I disagree with the approach most State PUC's are implementing fees. Every rate payer should be ...

The basis for selling electricity to the electric grid, as established in the late 1970's by passage of the Public Utilities Regulatory Policies Act (PURPA), required a "fair & reasonable rate" for the electric power. "Fair and reasonable" was based on a principle of "avoided cost" which is "what it ...

Robert, you don't say what State you are in. If there is an SEIA state or regional industry chapter or an ASES Chapter, they usually have efforts to lobby on net metering issues with State legislatures, and at the Public Utility Commissions. I actually do not agree with you on fees. In the State of ...

Joe is exacty right. Ductless heating is the way to go and the higher the building insulation, the better. MY office has R-45+ insulation with a minisplit MY house has R-38 insulation with a direct-exchange geothermal heat pump. Both powered by olsar and works like a charm - even in 15 degree F weather ...

Keith, You are right, but I must say , conventional high-value energy efficiency andrenewable energy do fine. I mean I have R-38 insulation and double-pane, argon filled, low-eCoating windows on my home, with thermal barrier paint underMy roof, solar water heating (with a. Pv-circ pump) and a direct-Exchange ...

Yes, this is your solution. - Scott Sol Ark will soon release a 15k inverter, which can receive/discharge 15kw from any source, which makes more sense in my mind. I will definitely be considering making that switch when it becomes available. Until then, maybe someone can help me navigate a way to get ...
