Absolutely! RESNet scoring starts with a blower door test. A what? Close up every opening to the outside especially a fireplace. The technician puts a stretchy plastic cover over an open door. There's a tiny fan on the cover. It's attached to the tech's computer. When the fan is turned on it's pulling ...

Really great news. Thanks, Deb. HERS ratings are taking on another significant level and deserve a greater public awareness. Financing the best of buildings with a HERS score could not be more appropriate. ------------------------------ Wyldon Fishman Bronx NY ------------------------------

If you know of companies with solar products, the New York Solar Energy Society www.nyses.org with Solar Energy Industries Association www.seia.org is developing relationships for shipping and delivering solar chargers, "suitcase" kits and systems. Please state whether owners manuals can be translated ...

Keep sending ideas for homeowners to become aware of how "easy" it is to check a solar energy producing system. Remember to send to the whole group so Ella can gather the facts. The more basic first step might be to peek at an inverter but let's vote on the order of presentation to the public. Bumper ...

How many homes probably have solar electric power systems that do not work well? Or at all? Can we help you check your system? Technical scary? Inverter thingy? Gee, what utility bill? Yeah, it's not the savings I thought it would be. Do you have any idea how many systems were never turned on correctly? ...

A lot of the Vermont arrays are on what looks like trackers but are just tall structures that look like trackers and do not rotate. Fitch is right, though. Get about 13% more electricity with the trackers. I'd go for the manual tilt: up for summer and more vertical for winter. Modules weigh so much now ...

Hi Brynne, I read so much of the back-in-forth at first and then began to see more of the bill itself. The ITC looked very robust and I believe the carry-forward was in place as well as better terms for nonprofits. One upgrade not in the media would be the investment in transmission lines which gives ...

Tying up what Drew added.... National Solar Tour could add street fairs to actually educate, find like-minded people and get a new pin drop on the tour map. Find community in community solar, etc. ------------------------------ Wyldon Fishman Bronx NY wyldon1@gmail.com ----------------------------- ...

Definitely. In 2002 North Texas Renewable Energy Group (TXSES chapter) ran a brief survey and voted on the easy way to help everyone build better: 1. Site orientation 2. Insulation Insulation Insulation 3. ? (vents?) Get those three into every school curriculum, National Solar Tour, and building code. ...

Hi David, ASES members all share your keen interest in all things efficient and renewable. Desalination is energy intensive yet one did just come online in someplace like Dubai - supposedly. The sun can evaporate water and leave behind the salts, etc. Sea water is corrosive and osmosis isn't a cheap ...

Roya, Give us a bit more information. Is the house using less energy than it produces? Battery Back up? Which heat pump load with which solar collectors? Will the water runs be maximized. I encourage you to join our technical division for building science. We should be offering AIA CEUs on a topic like ...

Blankets and such would be for a fire if the switch could not be located. You'll need to know where the man breaker is, stop the meter, get an electrician. It takes and electrician to turn a system on so, best beware asking a question online as opposed to taking a course or being an installer? No bueno ...

Hydrogen goes by two definitions at this time: green hydrogen is made with renewable energy and gray is made with fossil fuels or nuclear power. New York State just announced a greenish gray deal with Plug Power of Rochester, NY. I don't consider electricity from a dam's turbines as green but the New ...

I'm very interested in a regular call to continue the discussion. Within ASES it falls under the old chapters meet-up called Legislation Education and the Policy Technical Division. I firmly believe it's also a good fit under Energy Economics. I propose a monthly meeting of the Energy Economics Technical ...

Sales does require an ability to straighten out facts for a customer with all the care of a kindergarten teacher helping non readers. Here at the New York Solar Energy Society nothing is peachy. We have similar issues. Since you are in MO and each state has a separate set of policies and regulations ...

Lots of homes are shaded or facing the wrong way! Community Solar has the benefit of grid back up and more equitable buy in for renters. SUN (Solar United Neighbors) is a great friend of ASES. Their advocacy projects and staff lead the nation on policy and regulations state by state. Community Solar ...

Solar thermal is much less expensive and far more widespread. It's all about using the natural heat from the sun. The biggest way to use solar thermal is long troughs of mirrors with a pipe running down and the water or fluid inside the pipe gets so super hot. The hot water can spin a turbine and make ...

Big landlords have reputations one must delicately check out. The city will know if there are any violations. If there are none, you may have a well run building in the first place. For your apartment there are opportunities to test for leaks especially when the wind is blowing. Finding little breezes ...

The energy efficiency first piece causes eyes to glaze over. Old "Flip the Switch" mentality demands an easier solution. No solutions seem to come from landlords. The 50 states and thousands of municipalities clench the keys while taking serious campaign funds from Big Fossil. "It's too expensive" rings ...
