Many installations in western Massachusetts have lightning protection for both AC and DC. A couple of years ago, it was necessary to replace the lightning arrester for a customer who had a nearby lightning strike. The charge controller and bypass diodes in the PV modules also needed replacement. - ...

It is my understanding that the Inflation Reduction Act, passed into law last November, provides the amount of the 30% income tax credit for PV and battery installations to non-profits, local governments, and homeowners who do not have a tax obligation. Details are starting to come out regarding how ...

Another option for off grid solar domestic water heating is to use a DC pump with a dedicated photovoltaic module. Controllers are available to make sure the pump only runs when there is enough thermal energy to heat the water tank.

Jeffrey, Sorry to hear that you received false information. The SMA TL series inverters allow the homeowner to close a switch during grid failure, to energize a separate circuit with a limited amount of power, while the photovoltaic array in receiving sunshine. The installation that I did at my home ...

About eight years ago the dealer had no access to a part that was needed. It appears that they get more profit from parts for newer cars. I never went back to the dealer. ------------------------------ Stu Besnoff owner Alpine Solar Heat and Hot Water, LLC ------------------------------

Thank you Julia for mentioning the Aptera, which has some similarities to my 2001 Honda Insight. The Honda Insight also weighs less than 2,000 pounds, and streamlines the airflow to lessen drag. Last week my car became less efficient because the driver side rear wheel well cover fell off. Not knowing ...

In addition to solar air heaters, solar hot water should be considered for space heating, as well as domestic hot water. Thermal energy is stored in water, which is non-toxic and low cost, and used at night and during the next day if cloudy. Thermal energy stored in water tanks at my home (1,915 ft elevation ...

My TI-30SLR calculator from 1982 is used frequently. An AM/FM radio obtained during 1970 is plugged in and used every day. Photovoltaic modules may last as long. It would be nice to have an inverter (without the internet connection) designed to also last a long time. ------------------------------ Stu ...

After telling a homeowner that I would activate his SolarEdge SE7600 grid tied inverter, then we could decide about the communication method for monitoring, the post from Bill Fitch described the benefit of just using the screen on the inverter. The post was saved, so it could be quoted, to convince ...

When level 1 (120 volt) or level 2 (240 volt) charging is used, AC goes into the EV. The battery charger in the EV changes AC to DC to charge the battery. With level 3 charging DC goes into the EV; this is referred to as fast charging. Frequent fast charging could shorten the life of the EV battery. ...

Some states have regulations that provide most of the net metering that you seek. It will be good if you can start to move your state legislature. It is also good that you contacted your people in Congress. As you pointed out, it may not happen soon, but if federal regulations require net metering nationwide, ...

In addition to the suggestions from Felix, reduce standby electrical loss. Cell phone and laptop chargers should be unplugged from the outlet when they are not being used. The small box that changes from 120 VAC to the charging voltage, uses (wastes) electricity when it is plugged in, even if it is not ...
